I recommend showing exactly who you are in your essay. The UVM board wants to see your individuality and your interests and how you can contribute to the school. There is no other place quite like UVM because of it's personality diversities. Don't be afraid to show your nerdy side.

UVM isn't too difficult to get into. I was a national merit finalist with a high GPA and pretty good test scores, so UVM could have been one of my "safety schools." Keep your grades at or above the B/B+/A- range, get involved in the community, and you should be good to go.

I'm probably an exception to the rule because my SATs were fairly high, so I got in pretty easily. But I don't think getting into this school is all that tough if you have a solid B/B+ average in HS and SATs above 1500 (or whatever the mean is).

Getting into the honors program (it makes the experience much better) is much more difficult. You'll want at LEAST a 2100 on your SATs (I have met other people with 2300+ scores here in the honors college, much to my surprise) and really good grades (I didn't have spectacular grades, but again, my SATs made up for them). If you get into the honors program, you definitely should consider coming here...
